OMGD Germany Chapitre

Bailliage of Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany
Freyburg, May 13-14, 2022

Discovering the Saale-Unstrut wine region
" an enjoyable weekend in the spirit of Chaîne! "

The Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) founded on September 2, 1963 is the specific section within the Chaîne which is dedicated to members with a particular interest in wines, spirits, liqueurs and crafted beverages. And so the Bailliage of Sachsen-Anhalt, led by Bailli Claas Plesch, invited members and their guests to participate in one of the first OMGD Chapitres in Germany. Claas’ aim was to introduce everyone to the Saale-Unstrut wine region and to make for closer links with his Bailliage.

A total of 102 members accepted the invitation and explored the beautiful wine region. Saale-Unstrut takes its name from the rivers Saale and Unstrut. It is the northernmost of Germany's wine regions and is therefore one of Europe's northernmost traditional wine regions.

On Friday 13th the Welcoming Dinner was held at the Thürkind Winery where our host was Vice-Échanson Mario Thürkind. We sat together in a romantic inner courtyard and enjoyed a wide variety of Thürkind wines. We were spoiled with culinary delights prepared by Vice-Conseiller Culinaire Sebastian Hadrys from Landhaus Hadrys in Magdeburg.

Bailli Claas Plesch organised a tombola for the benefit of the Bailliage of Germany’s Chaîne Foundation. Naturally, the prizes were wine-related - quite appropriate for the event. It was a great evening, and of course, putting the members in a good mood ensured a successful start to the weekend.

On Saturday morning we drove to two wineries in the region - Weingut Pawis and Weingut Klaus Böhme. At both establishments we were invited to a wine tasting. Both Prof. Dr. Jörg Gabert (a Maître Sommelier member), who accompanied us to Weingut Pawis and Luise Böhme, the current Wine Queen of Saale-Unstrutt, shared their wide knowledge. It was most evident that they are passionate about wine.

In the evening came the highlight of the weekend: the Induction Ceremony in the historic atrium of the Rotkäppchen Sekt winery in Freyburg where our host was the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Maître Sommelier Dr Mike Eberle.

A “gourmet mile” of pleasure, in the form of the products from five wineries and a fine distillery, awaited us after the ceremony. Tours of the Rotkäppchen Sekt factory were offered exclusively for the members and their guests in small groups. A direct tasting from one of the huge steel tanks was an absolute highlight.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wineries, the Rotkäppchen Sekt winery and the Bailliage of Sachsen-Anhalt for an enjoyable weekend in the spirit of Chaîne!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Vive la Chaîne!
